FOR FOREIGN NATIONALS
Would you like to contribute to Estonia's national defence but do not hold Estonian citizenship?
Current opportunity
An adult without Estonian citizenship may apply to become a supporting member of the Estonian Defence League. The admission decision, requirements and scope of participation are determined during the Defence League's assessment and also depend on the specific role.
Supporting membership does not automatically confer active-member status, a wartime post or the right to participate in armed training. These points must be confirmed separately before you begin.
Read the current Defence League ActWithin Echo Company, the machine-gun section may be one possible path for applicants without Estonian citizenship. Tell us about your background, language skills, legal basis for residing in Estonia and preferred role, and we will assess the options with you individually.
What may change?
The Estonian Parliament is considering Bill 962 SE, which aims to allow citizens of NATO member states to participate more flexibly in Estonia's national defence and to create a legal basis for assigning them to wartime posts carrying military rank.
The bill being considered does not mean that the proposed changes are already in force. Before any decision to join, we always confirm the law currently in force and the Defence League's official guidance.
